After Milan and even Rome, Naples was another country for us. Personally, I thought that Naples would be like Palermo - refined, but rough around the edges. It turned out Naples was more like Catania - rough around the edges, but interesting if you can divert your attention from edges.
Our hotel was close enough to the train station, but I really did not like the street we were supposed to take; normally I avoid such streets. The streets in the center were very narrow, with piles of garbage and graffiti and occasional inklings of some fine buildings. As a bonus our hotel had a computer with Internet access in the room, but an underpowered AC.
Naples is the birthplace of pizza and we had to try the real pizza. We had pizzas there for two days and they were always excellent. Needless to say, what's called pizza in States is very different from the original.
We took a train to Pompeii and spent another hot day there. I had very little idea about the grandeur of the place and how advanced the life was 2000 years ago.
