Segesta

After a day and a half in Palermo it was time for me to leave Palermo. To rent a car I took a bus to the airport. I don't think I could have made it out of Palermo in a car. Actually, there is an additional premium to get a car in the center. Renting was easy - I took  a small manual car (Fiat). As usually I forgot how to switch the rear gear (you lift the disk on the stick). Driving on divided highways was easy and painless. My next stop was

Segesta, a field in the middle of nowhere (70 km from Palermo) with an unfinished Doric temple. It was not built by the Greeks, but by the Elymians, an indigenous population of Sicily in the 5th century BC.

From Segesta I drove to Erice, another town founded by Elymians. The town sits atop a mountain (750 m above the sea level) with beautiful views.

It is said that in good weather one can see Africa.
