The trip was born out of necessity - having maxed out my vacation time at work I desperately needed vacation. As usually the plans were too ambitious. Spain + Morocco or Italy + Malta + Tunis (Cartage). And as usually the plans were scaled down to some reasonable size. At the end I decided to combine Sicily with the North of Italy. Rome, Naples, and Puglia will have to wait.
The plan was to fly to Palermo, drive around Sicily, fly from Catania to Bologna, set a base in Bologna and make one day trips from Bologna before retreating to Milan before flying home. For some reasons (busy at work) I did not book airline tickets until one week before the departure; even worse I started booking the hotels two night before the departure. I used to be much more organized...
The layover in Detroit was really bad - one of the engines did not start and we spent 5 hours watching the engine being repaired. I came to Palermo exhausted after almost 24 hours of flying and waiting.
